Cultivating Joy
ABC of Mental Health
Hello! Welcome to another edition of ABC of Mental Health, where we explore small but powerful ways to nurture well-being. This week, in honour of International Day of Happiness (March 20th), we’re diving into the art of cultivating joy—not just as a fleeting feeling, but as an intentional practice. Joy isn’t just about momentary happiness; it’s about creating space for moments of lightness, connection, and self-expression—even during difficult times.
If you enjoy reading this, share it with someone who could benefit from adding more joy to their life 😊
One relevant recommendation:
Create a "Joy List"
Write down 5 small things that bring you joy (a song, a scent, a walk, a favorite snack, etc.). Then, actively integrate them into your daily routine. Joy isn’t something we wait for—it’s something we make room for. Science shows that regularly engaging in small joyful activities can improve resilience, reduce stress, and boost overall well-being.
Two Quotes on Joy and Happiness:
Mahatma Gandhi, leader and activist, on true happiness:
"Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony."
Henri Nouwen, theologian and writer, on the practice of joy:
"Joy does not simply happen to us. We have to choose joy and keep choosing it every day."

Joy Can Coexist with Difficult Emotions: You don’t have to be 100% happy to experience joy. Finding small moments of laughter, gratitude, or comfort—even on hard days—can shift your emotional state. What’s one joyful thing you can do for yourself today?
Joy Looks Different for Everyone: For some, joy is about excitement and adventure; for others, it’s about peace and stillness. There’s no "right" way to experience joy. Honor what feels genuinely fulfilling to you.
Sharing Joy Multiplies It: Research shows that acts of kindness increase happiness for both the giver and the receiver. Whether it’s sending a heartfelt message, surprising a friend with their favourite treat, or simply sharing a laugh, spreading joy creates a ripple effect.
